This is a sketch-from-life of Monet by American artist Mark Tobey, archivally framed and presented in mid-century lines (love these hardwood walnut profiles!).
The reverse bevel on the bottom mat, and the recessing between the two mats lend some nice depth to the piece. The paper for the sketch is super sheer, and the drawing goes all the way out to the edges — this made mounting the piece interesting!
Rather than hinging, which could be seen through the paper (not to mention potentially damaging), the sketch is laying in and supported by a Japanese paper “trough” which goes around all edges. This, combined with the archival rag matting and glass which blocks 99% of harmful UV light, will allow the piece to be removed from the frame and be in perfect condition.
